Porn prevents the sexual abuse of children. I read this "fact" in a recent edition of 'Physhology Today' magazine. The article even cited two studies that seemed to support this. The theory was that if a man who is a potential offender views porn and masturbates, then he is less likely to offend. The article cites a drop in sex crimes of 5% from 2008 thru 2009. These statistics and the idea that porn will prevent the sexual abuse of children are ludicrous and, to me, a highly unethical posit to make. The only intelligent thing that the article stated was that most men who sexually abuse children have some sort of mental health problem (probably from being abused themselves).
I am not a scientist, but i am a former abuser and I have studied myself and the factors that surround these crimes. it is my theory that if you add pornography to the other factors surrounding the sexual abuse of a child (triggers, prior abuse of abuser, psychological problems of abuser, and access to a child) then you very greatly increase the likelihood of that child being abused.
Pornography is intended to arouse and to decrease sexual inhibition. When viewed by someone who might offend and already has a decreased inhibition in his thoughts, porn can be the deciding factor in his decision to offend.
Do not be fooled, pornography is abused everyday and anyone who believes that porn is going to save a child who is in danger of being abused, especially a scientist, is not stable themselves. The only way to keep our children safe is to educatte ourselves and our children and the people who might ofend. it is the only way.
